How to auto-forward text messages to another phone?

Automatically relay incoming SMS to a different phone number.

SMS forwarding allows you to automatically send your incoming text messages to another phone number. This is perfect for sharing messages with a family member, forwarding work texts to a personal phone, or backing up important messages. This feature uses Apple Shortcuts and will send messages from your iPhone.

Important Notes

Things to know about SMS forwarding:

  • Standard SMS/MMS rates may apply based on your carrier plan
  • Messages are sent from your phone number (recipient will see it's from you)
  • International forwarding may incur additional charges
  • Smart Filters are not available for SMS destinations due to Shortcuts limitations
  • iMessage recipients will receive messages via iMessage if available

Troubleshooting

Messages not forwarding

Ensure your Shortcuts automation is set to 'Run Immediately'. Check that you have cellular service or WiFi calling enabled.

Recipient not receiving messages

Verify the phone number is correct and includes the country code. Check that the recipient hasn't blocked your number.

Getting charged for each message

Forwarded messages count as regular SMS. If you're forwarding many messages, consider using a messaging app like Telegram or Slack instead.

Messages delayed

SMS delivery depends on your carrier and network conditions. During high traffic times, messages may take longer to send.
